Last month, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) announced its partnership with Flow Labs to deploy AI-powered traffic signal software across the state.
Now fully operational, the deployment covers over 2,500 intersections.
This is the largest statewide deployment of AI-based traffic signal software in the United States.
“North Carolina didn’t just invest in a new tool—they embraced a new model for traffic operations,” said Jatish Patel, CEO of Flow Labs. “NCDOT’s leadership and engineering teams are among the most progressive and mission-driven in the nation. Their willingness to act decisively and deploy smarter solutions at scale has made this partnership incredibly rewarding.”
According to the transportation company, more than 90 percent of traffic signals in the U.S. are not actively monitored.
In addition, it’s estimated that 25 percent of roadway delay is caused by improper signal timing.
Flow Labs’ platform uses advanced machine learning and connected vehicle data to deliver continuous monitoring of intersection performance.
Engineers can detect issues before they escalate, prioritize interventions based on real-world traffic patterns, and improve signal operations without relying on field studies, hardware deployments or infrastructure changes.
“This isn’t a plan or a future vision—it’s a fully deployed statewide system that’s delivering value today,” Patel added. “We’re proud to support an agency like NCDOT that doesn’t wait for change—they lead it.”
With no need for new hardware or lengthy installations, Flow Labs’ software provided NCDOT with network-wide insights and reporting capabilities immediately upon install.
